EAST HAVEN — Elaine and Richard Charpentier — still without power in their Dwight Place condominium following Tuesday’s hit from Tropical Storm Isaias — drove an hour Wednesday night to their camper up at Gardner Lake in Salem just for a hot shower, a few hours of cool air-conditioning and a good night’s sleep.
“We’re kind of lucky in a way,” because they have a camper set up in Salem, Elaine Charpentier said. “So we went up and took a shower.”
But when Thursday rolled around, they still were without power, two days after Isaias toppled a big tree that fell on their neighbor’s car and took out a nearby transformer.
Richard Charpentier, who delivers oil for a living, had to return to East Haven early in the morning to work. Elaine Charpentier, who works as a home health aide, also was working by 9 a.m.
Meanwhile, their son, also named Richard, was at home to let them know if or when the power is restored.
So far, nothing, Elaine Charpentier said.
There are only five condos in their Cornerstone Walk complex, and they’re the only ones in their immediate neighborhood without power. Elaine Charpentier said that “because it’s only a small grid,” their problem is not United Illuminating’s highest priority.
But one of their neighbors, who is in her 70s, is disabled and on oxygen. That woman — who also is the one whose car the tree hit — had to go stay in a hotel, Elaine Charpentier said.
Meanwhile, the Charpentiers threw out a bunch of food and continue to wait, she said.
Charpentier thinks that because one of their neighbors is older, disabled and on oxygen, they should be a higher priority for power restoration.
They actually were sort of lucky to get those hot showers and a cool night’s sleep at their camper.
“We lost power at camp,” too, “but they have a backup generator. It goes to propane,” she said. “They got hit hard, too. We were lucky that they did restore power there.”
