(NBC News) -- Hurricane Laura slammed into the Louisiana coast early Thursday, delivering 150 mile per hour winds and a potentially deadly storm surge.
It was the most powerful hurricane to hit the state in 164 years.
As of 8 a.m., the storm had weakened, but remained a Category Two hurricane as it pushed inland.
Forecasters have warned that Laura's storm surge could deadlier than the winds, peaking at up to 20 feet.
