The morning after Hurricane Laura, John Knox looked around his neighbor’s yard and thought, “well, I guess the pecans are harvested.”
Knox, 65, lives in a yellow house on Highway 12 east, 2 miles outside of the East Texas town of Deweyville. Fallen trees and power lines have made stretches of the highway feel like an agility course.
“We got an hour of sleep last night,” he said. But it could have been worse: The most damage his home got was the shingles torn from parts of the roof. He’d been worried about the front windows blowing out. In the morning, they were unscathed.
