The Libertarian Party’s 2020 candidate isn't letting a minor flap get in the way of campaigning for president.
Jo Jorgensen, who was set to hit the campaign trail with visits to Louisiana and Mississippi this weekend, announced she wouldn’t be able to attend the first Saturday morning event after being bitten a bat, but would make further scheduled campaign appearances later in the day.
“I will be getting a rabies vaccine as a precaution after having been bitten by a bat near the start of this campaign tour!” Jorgensen tweeted late Friday.
Jorgensen added that she intended to speak at a campaign event in Hattiesburg, Miss., later on Saturday, using the “#LetHerSpeak” hashtag she’s been promoting to garner support for joining the presidential debate stage this fall.
How Jorgensen came into contact with the bat remains unknown, but that didn’t stop the Clemson University psychology lecturer from making light of the encounter.
Jorgensen relished Twitter’s comments on the incident referring to her as the DC Comics’ superhero Batgirl, replying directly to users’ quips with GIFs, wit and one-liners.
“You're supposed to get bitten by a radioactive spider, to gain super powers. Batman wasn't bitten by a bat,” one user said to Jorgensen.
“I'm not Batman,” Jorgensen replied with a winking face emoji.
The CDC recommends that people who have come into contact with a rabid animal receive four doses of a vaccine, the first of which must be administered immediately after exposure.
A poll conducted by CNBC/Change Research in late July shows Jorgensen with 2% support among likely voters.
