A homeless man accused of breaking into a Lakewood home was taken into custody Sunday, officials said, after barricading for several hours with an assault rifle and at one point turning the weapon toward deputies.
At around 9:30 a.m., the resident of the house in the 5400 block of Spahn Avenue came home to find a stranger inside, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a Monday statement. The man who broke in, identified as 38-year-old Robert Arista, refused to leave the home for several hours but was in custody after deputies used tear gas to lure him out.
“When deputies arrived, they saw the male suspect walking around inside the home with an assault rifle,” the statement said. “He then pointed the rifle at the deputies.”
No one else was inside of the home during the incident. Surrounding homes were evacuated.
The Sheriff’s Department said negotiators tried to make contact with Arista to try to persuade him to surrender, but he did not comply. By around 6:30 p.m., Arista was in custody after tear gas deployed, said Deputy Trina Schrader, a department spokesman.
It was not yet released how or at what point Arista obtained the assault rifle, she said. It was also not known whether the rifle was his or not.
Arista was booked on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and burglary. He was being held on $200,000 bail and was expected to make his first court appearance on Tuesday at the Bellflower Courthouse.
