WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – A man accused of shooting at police during a 36-hour armed standoff in Superior Township in March is heading to trial

Omar Saad Shafie waived preliminary examination Tuesday, Aug. 24, sending his case to trial on seven felony charges. He is accused of barricading himself inside his parent’s home in the 5600 block of Meadows Drive in the early morning hours of March 24. The armed standoff ended at 4:30 p.m. the next day, March 25.

Shafie, 32, was arraigned March 29 on three felony counts of assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of malicious destruction of police property and one count each of body armor-wearing during commission of a violent crime and discharging a firearm in or at a building.

Shafie’s parents called 911 at about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 24, reporting that their son was suffering a mental health crisis and had assaulted them, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

They stated their son was armed with multiple weapons and was wearing a flak jacket with multiple magazines strapped to his body, police said.

Deputies were able to safely evacuate the family from the home, but Shafie refused to exit, leading to the standoff where he allegedly fired off several rounds, police said.

Shafie briefly broadcast the incident on Facebook Live, allegedly showing him fire off several round at deputies outside the home, police said.

There were no injuries reported, but police equipment was destroyed in the incident, police said.

Shafie is currently detained in the Washtenaw County Jail with bond set at $500,000. He faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
