One of the first things I do each morning when I get out of bed is draw up the window shades and watch the sunlight fill the room.
Even on cloudy or rainy days, light manages to pour through. It freshens and enlivens the space. When the light hits my face, I am reminded that God’s mercies are renewed each morning. I am reminded that He is my source, my provider, my protector and my advocate.
Light will come. We have been promised it, and the promises of God will not return void.
However, that promise does not speak of an easy path. Before we are reminded of God’s mercy and faithfulness, the book of Lamentations paints a picture of darkness and despair.
There is sickness and hunger. There is imprisonment and heavy chains. There are predators and prayers that seem to be unheard and unanswered. There are weapons that both formed and prospered. There are wounds and wickedness and an absence of peace.
But in the morning, there is light and new mercies. Through it all, God is faithful.
We have to be patient. We have to endure until the end. And while we wait for morning, for light, for new mercies, we have to remember to call out the darkness.
We have to call out hunger, sickness, poverty and pain. We have to call out weapons that have harmed us and our friends. We have to acknowledge the hurt, the anger, the sadness, the mourning.
Broken bones don’t heal properly when they are ignored. They have to be acknowledged, tended to, and reset in order to fuse together in a way that works for the good of the whole body.
Until the light comes, we have to remind the world of the promise of light. We have to keep the light burning in ourselves so others can see it. We have to remember that we are built for a purpose that will outlive us.
We have to unashamedly, unapologetically expose darkness with our light, knowing that though we can sometimes grow dim, get weary and worn, our light will overcome darkness. And God will come through. He will recharge us, refresh us, renew us, reignite us.
Morning by morning, we will draw up the shades and allow the light to hit our faces. We will breathe it in. We will let it flood us and expose our internal darkness. We will see ourselves in the context of God’s faithfulness, and it will humble us.
As Martin Luther King Jr. said: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Until morning, I will let my little light shine.
