Turnout in New Canaan exceeded 43 percent, including absentee ballots, by 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The town’s three polling places welcomed 730 in-person voters from 6 to 7 p.m., another 784 from 7 to 8 a.m., joining another 4,778 of the town’s 14,551 voters who already filed absentee ballots.

New Canaan’s turnout for the 2016 presidential election was 80 percent.

Before the sun rose over Ponus Middle School in Norwalk, the parking lot was full and a line snaked from the school gym entrance back nearly to Hunter’s Lane.

Rosanne Cundari, who for many years has voted at the school, said she had never seen a line so long on Election Day.

“Even in 2008 for Obama,” she added.

“We thought we’d be ahead of it,” said Eric Borrow, who recently moved to the area.

Frank Guthman, who said he’d voted at the school since 1969, also said he had never seen such a queue of people waiting to cast ballots.

With the line on one side of the perimeter of the parking lot, representatives of both parties began moving campaign signs and themselves from a centralized location near the exit to a spot closer to those waiting to get inside.

“Where were these people all the other elections?” Patty Guthman asked.

7:45 AM

Voters bundled up and braved the cold and winds at the top of Whittlesey Drive outside the Frank A. Berry School in Bethel, with the line of voters stretched throughout the parking lot.

Unlike some other polling locations in neighboring Danbury, there are a few open parking spots for incoming voters to snag.

7:32 AM

The line of voters nearly wrapped around to the back of the building at the Stony Hill fire Department in Bethel.

Cars filled the front and back parking lots, with additional voters parked along the side of Weed Road, adjacent to the fire house.

In Danbury, the line stretched from the back gym entrance of Shelter Rock School down the sidewalk in front of the school, and down to the sidewalk along the road.

One Danbury police cruiser is stationed outside the polling location.

The parking lot is packed, with new voters taking spaces as other voters filed their ballots and freed up space. Cars lined the street outside the schools as the line of voters grew.

Poll workers reminded voters to socially distance themselves and stay safe.

6:30 AM

6:15 AM

Danbury residents at the front of the line at Park Avenue Elementary School say they’ve been out here since around 5 a.m.

While all residents are bundled up, a few even brought chairs to get comfortable on the line — which, before polls even opened at 6 a.m, stretched down the entire sidewalk in front of the school, down along the right side of the building and wrapped around the entire school.

The parking lot was packed with vehicles, as many people searched for a spot to squeeze their cars into.
