What do you do when faced with a global pandemic and need to make a hard and gut-wrenching decision of cancelling one of the biggest and brightest longstanding events in our historic downtown? You go back to the drawing board, listen to suggestions and work tirelessly to come up with something that will keep volunteers and guests safe, help our merchants and show that Globe can shine right through it all. Our annual light parade would have been in its 24th year, but instead we worked together and brought light into our Globe, literally. The Light the Town/”Be the Light” lighting of the Globe historic downtown event coupled with the “Be the Light” virtual contest has been a great success. Thank you to our board of directors, and to our volunteers who worked hard to help merchants hang lights and judge the first wave of this contest (note: the “Virtual Holiday Contest” second wave is ongoing and the judging will close on Jan. 4). Thank you to our all-volunteer team who have been setting up the town Christmas tree on the old courthouse bandstand for the last 25 years, sometimes in winds and rain. Thank you to our volunteers who anonymously judged this year’s contest. Trust us, we took a team from our board door-to-door on the judging Saturday night and we know how hard the work was cut out for them! Also, a huge and amazing shout-out and thank you to Mayor Al Gameros along with the Southern Gila County Economic Development Corporation for their amazing sponsorship for the top three category winners. We are excited to safely pop into the businesses with their winnings for photo ops next week. The business facade winners for the 2020 “Be the Light” contest in our Globe historic district:
