A Winter Weather Advisory in effect from Thursday evening through Friday afternoon for Niagara, Orleans, northern Erie, Genesee, Wyoming and Allegany counties.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued from Thursday evening until Saturday evening for Southern Erie, and Chautauqua, and Cattaraugus Counties.
A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued from Friday at noon until Saturday evening for Northern Erie, Genesee, and Wyoming Counties.
A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued from Thursday night until Friday evening for McKean and Potter Counties.
As with all lake effect snow, conditions over a few miles can change rapidly, a small jog to the north will cause the Metro area and northtowns to receive several more inches of snow. It's one your 7 First Alert Weather Team will stay on top of as this event unfolds.
Lake effect will cause varying conditions in a short distance. Be prepared for low visibility with drifting and blowing snow as gusts reach 35mph. Travel will be very difficult within intense lake effect, don't be caught off guard and check 7 Super Doppler before traveling.
HOUR BY HOUR: What to Expect
THROUGH 7PM
Rain, heavy at times, mild temperatures, windy conditions and rainfall totals from .5"-1" . Minor flooding concerns for the eastern S.Tier where highest rainfall totals combined with snowmelt may cause creeks and streams to overflow their banks.
7PM-MIDNIGHT
Rain transitions to snow with a brief time of freezing rain or sleet. .10" possible, slicking up untreated surfaces. Temps plummet from 40s to 20s.
MIDNIGHT-7AM
Snow, heavy at times, lightening up through the morning. Generally a few inches will be on the ground making it a White Christmas across WNY. The western S.Tier in Chautauqua county will end up with the most, 5-7" while our western counties see around 3-5" and the further east and south you go the less you have between 1-3" and the S.Tier where rain lasts the longest, under an inch is likely.
7AM - 3PM
Unorganized lake snow on a NW wind shifts a bit more to the west with a lull in activity for much of WNY. While S.Erie county and Wyoming county receive minor lake effect.
3PM - MIDNIGHT
Winds being the shift to WSW and allows the lake effect to strengthen, becoming more singular for S.Erie and Wyoming counties. As winds become more SW, snowfall rates of 2" an hour will be possible as the band gains more moisture from the longer fetch across Lake Erie and shifts to the metro area
MIDNIGHT-7AM

7AM-NOON
Lake snow shifts a bit north for the Buffalo northtowns and could drop several more inches along with continuing lake snow for Buffalo.

Band drifts south, loses its intensity
5PM-9PM
Continues to drift south and drys out as moisture and lake influence dissipates.
