MARYLAND — A wintry mix is likely to tangle up the evening commute for many Marylanders Wednesday, with more than 150 accidents before rush hour hit. After snow brushed the region in the morning, weather officials say sleet and freezing rain are likely in the afternoon and evening in central Maryland, where ice may accumulate.

Snow emergency plans are in effect for Allegany, Carroll, Frederick, Garrett, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's and Washington counties, Maryland State Police reported after 2 p.m. This means people may not park on roads designated as snow emergency routes in these areas.

Several state parks closed due to winter weather conditions, according to Maryland State Parks: Greenbrier, Gunpowder Falls (Hammerman area), North Point, Patapsco Valley, Rocks (Rock Ridge area), Seneca Creek and Washington Monument.

"Travel is becoming more difficult where our winter storm warning & winter weather advisory are in place," the National Weather Service said in a statement just before 1 p.m. "If you need to travel during this storm, be extra cautious."

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Maryland State Police tweeted its officers had responded to 489 calls for service, including 161 crashes and 60 unattended/disabled vehicles. For the latest in state road conditions and travel alerts, visit http://md511.org.

These areas are under the winter storm warning until 4 a.m. Thursday:

  • Baltimore County (northern)
  • Carroll County
  • Harford County (northwest)

Areas under the winter storm warning could see 4 to 8 inches of accumulation. The highest snow and sleet totals are expected in northwest Carroll County, near the Mason-Dixon Line.

Those who must travel should keep an extra flashlight, water and food in their vehicles in case of an emergency.

"Travel could be very difficult," the National Weather Service warned. "Visibility will be reduced below one-quarter mile at times in snow."

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 1 a.m. Thursday for these areas, which are expecting about 1 to 2 inches of snow and sleet:

  • Baltimore City
  • Baltimore County (southern)
  • Cecil County
  • District of Columbia
  • Harford County (southeast)
  • Howard County (central and southeast)
  • Montgomery County (central and southeast)

"Plan on slippery road conditions," the winter weather advisory states. "The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute."

A flood watch has been issued for central and southern Maryland, and a gale warning is in effect on the Chesapeake Bay and lower tidal Potomac River, where winds may gust to about 35 knots.

The flood watch is in effect until 7 a.m. Thursday for these areas:

  • Anne Arundel County
  • Calvert County
  • Charles County
  • Prince George's County
  • St. Mary's County

Approximately 1 to 2 inches of rain may fall in the areas under the flood watch, which could cause isolated cases of flooding, particularly in flood-prone locations. People should be prepared to take action if flooding occurs.

Around the state, officials advise pedestrians to watch their first few steps on sidewalks, driveways and stairs, which could be slippery.

Drivers should slow down, expecting slippery roads and potentially hazardous conditions.

As of Wednesday afternoon, precipitation is transitioning from snow to a mix across the state.

Here are the observations reported to the National Weather Service as of 1 p.m.:

Areas west of Interstate 81 and north of the I-66 corridors will see periods of heavy snow later Wednesday afternoon through the evening.

Southern Maryland will see a rain-snow mix shift to all rain by the early afternoon, and mixed precipitation will also develop along the I- 95 corridor by early afternoon and "march westward as warmer air gets drawn in from the Atlantic Ocean," according to the discussion reported by the National Weather Service forecasters.

"A switch over to plain rain seems likely along and east of I-95, primarily south of Baltimore and into southern Maryland ... and with the already saturated ground in place, a flood watch is in effect. Isolated instances of flooding will be possible, particularly those flood prone locations," forecasters said. "A potential limiting factor to the flooding threat will be a dry slot working its way into the area late this afternoon and evening."
