Some Bonita Springs residents frustrated by blinding street light - ABC7 News

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla.– Some residents of one Bonita Springs community say they feel they’re on display after recently installed street lights are illuminating their lanai’s and homes on a nightly basis.

Chris Sprake is one of many living in Bonita Landing on Bonita Beach Road in Bonita Springs who are growing weary of their lanai and living room is illuminated by new street lights.

“It’s like a landing strip,” said Sprake. “Ever since these lights went up, It’s just been really difficult at night. It’s daylight.”

He’s far from the only one in the community dealing with the issue. Chris Applegate lives nearly a half-mile away from Sprake but bright street lights stream right into his bedroom.

“It’s concerning. It feels like a full moon every night,” said Applegate.

He has been voicing his frustrations with the Bonita National Community Development Department. He was told a contract was made with FPL in January of 2020 to install the lights before the Bonita Landing development was even complete.

Applegate said he feels those who live in the Bonita Landing area should have had a say in installing the lights and what kind of lights they are.

“When I inquired as to why other options weren’t considered they said because financially was a better option to work with FPL,” said Applegate.  “Seems like the light and everything just comes down to cost.”

He was able to halt the installation of new lights along that stretch of road, for now.

“They looked into it and saw that the permits hadn’t been applied for, for what they were doing,” said Applegate.

Applegate said he’s been told to get blackout curtains for his bedroom to curtail the problem but that’s not the solution Chris is looking for.

“That just seems a bit much when we didn’t cause the problem,” said Applegate.

Many people in the community say they understand the street lights will aid drivers on that stretch of road at night but that still doesn’t ease their frustrations when the light shines into their homes every evening.

“It’s annoying. I know we have to have the lights for safety out there on the road but I’m sure there’s something I can do to stop the back part of the lake coming as bright as it does into the back of the lanai,” said Chris Sprake.

Neighbors are hoping crews will install covers on the lights or reflectors to dull the glow.
