Rowan University's Day of Giving, an institution-wide 24-hour challenge, takes place March 9 - Rowan Today

Rowan University students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends will celebrate the institution’s eighth annual Day of Giving Wednesday, March 9.

Formerly called RowanGIVES Day, the rebranded 24-hour program generates tens of thousands of dollars each year to support students and programs.

“A giving day event is a very public statement about the health of an institution’s culture of philanthropy. On Rowan’s Day of Giving, of all the constituencies we engage – alumni, faculty, staff, friends – none are more important than students,” said Jesse Shafer, vice president for University Advancement. “It’s a day in which students see example after example of how people they’ve never even met are investing in their future.”

As during past programs, the goal is as much about participation as philanthropy. It’s about starting a lifelong habit of supporting one’s community, including the community that students are a part of now.

“Hopefully all of the goodwill the day generates will inspire our students to become lifelong supporters of Rowan themselves,” Shafer said.

The 2021 program, which was held online, raised a record-breaking $133,808 from 1,100 donors. Since 2014, the event has raised more than $600,000 to support Rowan students and programs. This year, students, faculty, staff, alumni, family and friends of the University may donate online or in-person.

Accept the challenge

As in past years, the Division of University Advancement has created a number of “challenges,” fundraising initiatives that, when met, unlock additional dollars for specific programs and causes. Past beneficiaries included the James S. Huff-Miller Memorial Scholarship, Rowan Radio WGLS-FM, Rowan Emergency Medical Services and many others.

For 2022, members of the Rowan University Foundation Board of Directors made personal Day of Giving donations totaling more than $40,000. These funds will be pooled to create a dollar-for-dollar “Foundation Board Challenge” to encourage giving at all levels.

“We’re grateful to the Foundation Board for leading the way and sending a message to our stakeholders that their gifts will be appreciated and, together, will have a significant impact on our students,” said Brittany Petrella, associate vice president for University Advancement.

More than one way to give

Rowan’s key major day of giving each year includes opportunities to donate one’s time in addition to, or instead of, a monetary gift.

This year’s Philanthropy Fair, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Chamberlain Student Center pit, will include representatives from a wide range of clubs and charitable organizations including The SHOP Pantry & Resource Center, Rowan Unified Sports, the Autism PATH Program, the Student Government Association, Rowan Women’s Ice Hockey, Wrestling Club, Rowan Paintball, Circle K, Rowan University Dance Team, Student University Programmers and Rowan Fencing Club.

Gifts of time and/or funding may be made on the Day of Giving to these and many other campus organizations.

Be an alumni ambassador “champion”

Ahead of March 9, Rowan alumni are encouraged to volunteer as “Day of Giving Champions,” reaching out to fellow alumni, sharing and posting on social media and providing valuable post-campaign feedback.

As a special thank you, when alumni give and recruit three other Rowan community members to make a gift, they will receive a special T-shirt for volunteering. Learn more about becoming an alumni ambassador here.

Make a gift, make a difference

“Every dollar – and every hour – donated makes a huge difference,” Shafer said, noting that with generous matches and challenges the impact of one’s gift could double or triple its impact. “I hope you’ll join us in supporting your favorite Rowan causes.”
