INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Saturday was day two of a 72-hour cease fire called by the group Unity City Indy. Members gathered at locations across the city to host peace rallies, hold neighborhood clean-ups and hand out free resources and food to families.
The group said it was able to help hundreds of people who stopped by the set-up at East 25th Street and North Sherman Drive. Minister Jasmine Hamer with Unity City Indy said paying attention to people in every neighborhood goes along way.
“Today we had at least 200 people come to the corner — we had school supplies, food, books for the kids,” said Hamer.
Minister Shirley Jackson, who is also with the group, agreed.
“It holds a lot of meaning, you know — people start feeling like somebody cares because, this area to me, it went like a ghost town,” said Jackson.
Unity City Indy’s end goal is for more community projects and events to continue past the weekend so people stop picking up guns.
“Let’s just keep the energy going. We still have 48 hours left in the cease fire, so if we can make it to three days, three will turn into five and five can turn into seven and we can make it through the year without anymore homicides,” said Hamer.
The 72-hour weekend continues Sunday with a clean up event and peace rally at East 25th Street and Hillside Avenue from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. That’s followed by a rally at East 30th Street and Moller Road from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. There is also a teen basketball tournament at the JTV Hill Center beginning at 9 a.m.
