Pour on the salt, turn on the light - Argus Leader

Today at lunch I was enjoying some fresh produce from my garden…cucumber and tomato salad…mmm! While the veggies were fresh and full of flavor, it seemed like it needed something. So I added a little salt and that did the trick. My salad became alive with such flavor that my taste buds thought I was throwing them a party! What is it about adding a dash of salt that can improve the flavor of food so perfectly? Well, salt is a flavor enhancer. It also can add seasoning, and texture to any dish, and is used as a preserver for food.

But did you know that salt is essential for life? According to the Harvard Health Institute, “The human body can't live without some sodium. It's needed to transmit nerve impulses, contract and relax muscle fibers (including those in the heart and blood vessels), and maintain a proper fluid balance.” And it doesn't take much to do this. In fact, a little salt can go a long way.

In the Bible, Jesus uses salt and light as metaphors to teach on morality and discipleship. In Matthew 5:13-16 Jesus says, “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless. You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”

In other words, it is like Jesus is saying to us, “Be like salt. Enhance the lives of others through your words and deeds. Preserve your faith and bring purity to the world around you. Bring life to others by adding flavor to those you meet through the unique gifts I have given you. Live a life that demonstrates purity and morality.”  To 'be salt' means to deliberately seek to influence the people in your life by showing them the unconditional love of Jesus through words and actions that reflect His very nature.

Jesus goes on to talk about us being the light of the world. Wait a minute…I thought we were salt. We are, but we are also supposed to be the light of the world…salt and light go hand in hand. Salt is enhancing other lives through our words and actions (morality). Whereas light is sharing our knowledge and understanding of the Word of God, which is the Bible. This is called discipleship. If we were just salt of the earth, people would be influenced by our words and actions that are a reflection of our relationship with Jesus. But when we are also light, people are transformed by the Word of God and are drawn into a relationship with Him. And as Christ followers, we are called to make more disciples of Jesus.

But as always, the choice is ours. If we lose our flavor or if we hide our light, then we lose our effectiveness to change the world around us. Therefore, it is important for us to stay close to Jesus by studying His Word, praying to Him and living our lives for Him. When our personal faith is strong, we can truly be effective in being salt (demonstrating Christ’s morals) and light (discipling others) in the world. My friends, pour on the salt and turn on the light!
