DETROIT -- Cincinnati Reds pitcher Trevor Bauer called it “amateur hour,” but Detroit Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said the rain delay and ultimate cancellation of Saturday’s game was merely a result of unpredictable weather.
“That’s all it was. You can’t control the weather,” he said. “We can try to anticipate what’s going to happen...We talked about starting the game in a light rain, but it just got heavy. You can’t do anything about it.”
The Tigers moved Saturday’s game from 6:10 p.m. to 1:10 p.m., hoping to avoid showers that were passing through southeastern Michigan. In retrospect, that turned out to be the wrong move, as the showers came through in the early afternoon and had tapered off by the evening.
But Bauer was most upset that both starting pitchers had completed their full warm-up routine when the game was put in a delay just minutes before the scheduled first pitch.
Ideally, the start time is adjusted early enough to allow pitchers to adjust their pre-game routines accordingly.
Weather-related decisions are generally in the hands of the home team before the game. Once the game begins, umpires have jurisdiction over all aspects of on-field play, including weather stoppages.
“I know there’s frustrations on both sides, but what are you going to do?” Gardenhire said. “The rain is the rain and it rained.”
Bauer was not listed as the starter for either game of Sunday’s doubleheader (which is also threatened by rain) and it’s not clear when he’ll pitch next.
Likewise, because Tigers starting pitcher Michael Fulmer went through the entire warm-up process, Gardenhire has opted not to bring him back out to pitch Sunday.
“With his situation, and what he’s had to come back from, we’re definitely not going to do anything like that,” Gardenhire said. “He handed it very professional. We’re not going to risk anything with him. He’s fought too hard and worked too hard.”
Bauer was more pleased with the response on Sunday. Game 1 began in a rain delay, which was declared before pitchers began their warm-ups.
