SCOTCH PLAINS/FANWOOD, NJ -- It was a day that many Raiders fans thought they might never see: lights at the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School football and soccer fields.
On hand were Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School principal Dr. David Heisey and athletic director Ryan Miller, along with members of the SPFK12 administration, including superintendent Dr. Joan Mast, business administrator Debbie Saridaki, BOE president Dr. Karen Kulikowski, and BOE member Evan Murray.
"It has been a long time coming," Dr. Heisey said. "It's going to open more doors for our student athletes. We will be able to stagger practices. At lower lighting levels, we can continue practices past dusk now when the days are getting shorter.
Dr. Heisey said that the ability to host Friday night games will help increase attendance and support for Raiders sports teams. He also said that the lights would benefit the high school's acclaimed marching band. Although the marching band season this fall has been scuttled for now, he did not rule out the possibility that the band might be able to perform at competitions later in school year.
The first football game scheduled to take place on Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:00 p.m. However, the school district is awaiting a court ruling on use of the lights following a lawsuit filed by neighbors who fear that installation of the lights will lead to rentals of the field for outside events.
