After not disconnecting residents for two days as students returned to Shelby County Schools, Memphis, Light, Gas and Water announced Tuesday that utility disconnections were once again suspended. The new moratorium will be in effect until Sept. 14.
The disconnection moratorium was put in place after the Memphis City Council asked the city-owned utility to pause disconnections once again so the legislative body can understand what pools of money are available to pay for utility assistance.
Last week, the utility once again resumed disconnections after a five-month moratorium. The return of disconnections led to long lines of customers at community payment centers. Last Monday, Aug. 24, about 10,000 people were disconnected, but 5,415 were able to get their lights turned back on.
Amid council discussion of appropriating more funds for assistance, Memphis City Councilman Edmund Ford, Sr. asked the utility to pause disconnections for two weeks to give the council time. MLGW CEO J.T. Young said the utility would.
This is is a developing story. It will be updated.
