CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland police report that six homicides occurred in the city in the last 24 hours.
One of the incidents involved a Cleveland Metropolitan Housing Authority officer who shot and killed an 18-year-old on Haltnorth Walk near the King Kennedy-North Tower public housing complex.
Officials have not yet publicly identified the 18-year-old nor have they identified the officer who fired shots.
Sometime in the night Cleveland resident Katie Brown, 83, was found dead by family members in her Manor Avenue home. A man died after being shot several times in a food market parking lot.
Cleveland has had more than 160 homicides this year, the most in at least 27 years.
Here are the other homicides that Cleveland police are investigating:
A 63-year-old man was shot and killed about 9 a.m. in the driveway of a home on East 134th Street near Gabriel Court, Cleveland police spokeswoman Sgt. Jennifer Ciaccia said.
Police found him on the driveway with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, Ciaccia said.
Officers administered first aid until paramedics arrived and took him to University Hospitals. He was pronounced dead on arrival.
Witnesses say they saw a man get out of a blue car, walk up to the unidentified victim and shoot him, police said. The shooter got back into his car and drove away.
An 18-year-old man was shot in the chest and died Friday on Colgate Avenue just east of West 80th Street, Ciaccia said.
Paramedics took the unidentified man to MetroHealth where he was pronounced dead.
Investigators learned the man was shot while sitting in a car and then was pushed out of it when the driver decided to leave, Ciaccia said.
Early Saturday a 40-year old-man died after being shot in the chest.
A 43-year-old man suffered cuts to his head in the shooting that happened about 12:45 a.m. on Ansel Road near Kenmore Avenue, Ciaccia said.
Police found the unidentified 43-year-old man lying in an apartment. Paramedics took him to MetroHealth, where he was pronounced dead.
Police learned the victims were in the apartment with women when a fight started. The 40-year-man was shot.
Police are not sure how the second man suffered cuts on his head.
Cleveland City Councilman Basheer Jones said it is heartbreaking to see all of these homicides in the city.
“Over the past couple of months I’ve buried friends, residents and people around our great city due to violence, cancer and COVID,” Jones said in a statement. “Though we are social distancing we must not engage in spiritual distancing. Our city needs prayer more than ever before.”
