HOLYOKE – Police are investigating a total of four shootings that have occurred over the past 24 hours in the same neighborhood and left three males with serious injuries.

One of the crimes occurred on Saturday afternoon near the spot where officers were investigating a shooting that took place a half-hour earlier and left two people wounded, Holyoke Police Lt. James Albert said.

Detectives, who have been working since Friday night interviewing witnesses and sorting through evidence, are unsure if any of the shootings are related. They are asking anyone who witnessed any of the crimes, has any information about them or has any video or photographs that were taken at or around the time of any of the shootings to contact them at 413-322-6940 or 413-322-6900, he said.

Saturday police responded to calls of gunfire at about 1:48 p.m. at the corner of Sargeant and Walnut streets and found two gunshot victims. A 52-year-old man and a male who is a juvenile were brought to Baystate Medical Center, in Springfield, by ambulance with serious injuries, Albert said.

He referred further questions about that shooting to Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni’s office.

“We found some ballistic evidence and we locked down the area,” he said.

Between 12 and 15 officers from Holyoke Police and Massachusetts State Police had blocked off the road and had been working at the crime scene for about a half-hour when they heard gunfire nearby. They drew their weapons and ran toward the noise and found shell casings outside 164 Sargeant St.

“We ran across the street. We were on scene in 15 seconds,” he said.

The suspect is believed to have run into the building, a large, five-story apartment block with multiple doorways. Police entered the building, located at least one man and quickly arrested him. Albert did not immediately have the information about the suspect and the charges.

No one was struck by the bullets. The crime remains under investigation but is believed to have occurred during a dispute and is not related to the nearby shooting that left two people injured, he said.

A few hours later a third shooting occurred at 292 Pine St., which is across a vacant lot from the location where the two males were struck by gunfire. Detectives found at least six shell casings and other evidence but did not locate any victims, Albert said.

The cluster of shootings came 17 hours after an 18-year-old was shot and seriously injured less than half a mile away near 133 Walnut St. That crime occurred between 8 and 8:30 p.m., Albert said.

The male victim was taken to Baystate Medical Center and is recovering from his wounds, he said.

The crimes are being investigated by Holyoke Police and the Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to Gulluni’s office. They are being assisted by several other state police units including Crime Scene Investigations.
