Spokane has gorgeous holiday light displays at favorite local spots like Riverfront Park and Manito Park, as well as plenty of local residents who decorate their yards. That said, if you are stuck home with the travel bug, get out of the Inland Northwest and enjoy these virtual holiday light displays and celebrations from across the nation.

GM Financial Parade of Lights – This parade began in 1983 as a way to bring visitors to the Central Business District of downtown Fort Worth, Texas. The first parade had 25 participants and 25,000 but now features over 100 participants in the parade and sees annual crowds of more than 200,000 people. This year’s parade featured giant Big Bird and Elmo floats, a high school mariachi band, a stagecoach, a decorated DeLorean and many musical performances along the way. View it on the Downtown Fort Worth Youtube channel.

National Christmas Tree Lighting – The first National Christmas Tree was lit by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. The 48-foot fir featured 2,500 lights of green, white and red and was accompanied by performances from a local choir and a quartet from the U.S. Marine Band. The tree was erected by the District of Columbia Public Schools. It has been an annual tradition every year since, even during WWII when the tree could not be lit. The lighting ceremony is now presented by the National Park Foundation on The Ellipse, south of the White House, and has featured a planted, 30-foot Colorado blue spruce since last year. This year’s lighting ceremony can be viewed at thenationaltree.org, as well as archival photos and facts about previous ceremonies.

Macy’s Santaland – This year’s classic Christmas celebrations were reimagined to be accessible from home. Santaland has been a Macy’s holiday celebration since 1977, with decorations and light shows at Macy’s Herald Square in New York City. Before then, children had been visiting Santa at the Macy’s department store since 1861. View this year’s narrative light display with a video that gives an up close look at the organist as well as the giant light show. You can also find a virtual tour of Macy’s Dickens Village which tells the classic story of Ebenezer Scrooge through a miniature, animatronic village. Window Wonderland – New York City is always romanticized for the holidays, and there’s a reason for that. The city puts on incredible displays of Christmas spirit, including a nearly 150 year old tradition of holiday window displays through the streets of Manhattan. Take a tour of cotton candy couture gowns, Santa’s high-tech command center, ice skating rabbits and more, presented virtually by Google Shopping. Choose from retailers like Bloomingdale’s, Barneys New York, Lord & Taylor, Saks Fifth Avenue and more, then get an up close and high quality look at their magnificent window displays for this year. Visit windowwonderland.withgoogle.com to start your virtual window shopping.

Ogden’s Christmas Village – Ogden, Utah has been creating a winter wonderland of Christmas cottages since 1962. Passersby can stroll through the Municipal Gardens to view more than 60 themed cottages, peeking in their lit windows to see them decorated with dolls, Christmas trees and presents. Visit christmasvillagemap.ogdencity.com to view an interactive map of this year’s cottages and vote for your favorite.
