Renger van der Zande pulled off an early nominee for move of the race to take the lead of the 2021 Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring from pole sitter Pipo Derani, the #01 Chip Ganassi Cadillac going around the outside of the #31 Whelen/ Action Express Cadillac through Turn One as the Brazilian was briefly baulked by a pair of GTD cars.
The race almost immediately went to a full course yellow after Jimmie Johnson, tussling with the #5 Mustang Sampling Cadillac of Loic Duval, was pitched wide over one of the nastier bumps out of T17, lost control and half spun, tagging the #5 and causing damage to both cars, the #48 pitting for a replacement nose section.
The #5 too needed attention later to damage incurred on the left front of the car that saw the car dropping back and off the lead lap by the end of the second hour.
In somewhat more trouble at the end of the first hour was the #31 as Derani looked for a way by into the lead coming into T17 as the Cadillac pair closed in on more traffic, there looked to be a gap, but it disappeared rapidly as the GTDs took their line, squeezing van der Zande, who then in turn put Derani into the inside wall, the #31 pitting immediately with bent suspension front and rear on the right hand side, the moment ruled a racing incident
That put the #31 a full four laps astray with 10 hours to run.
Up front, better pitwork and good speed put the #10 Konica Minolta Acura of Ricky Taylor in the lead with Kevin Magnussen still in close contention, the lead pair with a gap to Dane Cameron in the #60 MSR Acura.
LMP2 saw Ben Keating fighting back to lead the class after an early drive through for missing the recon lap, the PR1 Mathiesen Oreca was running just ahead of the #11WIN Autosports car foo the remainder fo the second hour, Scott Huffaker fending off Thomas Merrill as the pair were reeled in by a hard-charging Ryan Dalziel, second driver aboard the #18 Era Motorsport car.
GTLM saw Tommy Milner almost immediately in trouble, the #4 Corvette nowhere close to full speed and seeing both BMWs go through at the start to go second and third to Garcia’s leading #3 Corvette.
Worse still Milner was dealt a drive through for switching lanes at the start and would be off the lead lap in class by the end of hour two, this after the car went through a full power reset in a routine stop to try to fix an apparent electronics issue.
The BMWs spent almost the full 2 hours right with the leader until the #24 of Jesse Krohn was dealt a drive through for causing an incident with Rob Ferriol’s #99 Hardpoint EBM GTD Porsche.
The Performance Tech Ligier led in LMP3 clear of the #7 Forty7 Motorsports Duqueine which took an elrly penalty for missing joining the grid.
GTD saw the #14 Lexus lead the pack at the end of two hours with the #16 Wright Motorsports Porsche second despite an early race driver through for a start procedure infringement.
Behind Lars Kern was fighting off the challenge of the charging #19 GRT Lamborghini in his #9 Pfaff Porsche.
There were problems though for the #96 Turner Motorsport BMW M6 GT3, behind the wall with an alternator issue- seven laps lost while the team replaced the part, for the #99 Hardpoint EBM Porsche, front bodywork after the clash with the #24 BMW, and for the #75 Sun Energy1 AMG – apparent electrical woes costing them a couple of laps.
