Once an ‘Out-of-Fad’ Style, Atriums Again See The Light of Day - Mansion Global

Ancient Roman homes were often built with central courtyards, known as atriums, to provide light and ventilation. Today, this architectural feature serves a different purpose: Bringing the outside in.

Atriums are open-air or skylight-covered spaces surrounded by a building. An atrium is similar to a courtyard except that atriums introduce an outdoor element to what’s perceived as the interior of a building. Atriums might evoke memories of office buildings or commercial hotels, but they were prominently featured in real-estate developer Joseph Eichler’s homes in the late 1950s, too.

"If you look at the ‘70s, ‘80s, and ‘90s, atriums were pretty much discarded. It was a very out-of-fad style," said Seth O’Byrne, a real-estate agent with Compass in San Diego. Atriums are back, and designers are using them as a way to create light, said O’Byrne. "Also, there’s this huge trend in design where nature and the outdoors are becoming a very important thing to bring back into homes," he said.

Kevin Bain, a Phoenix-based architect, incorporates atriums in large houses. "No matter how many windows you put on the exterior, as you get toward the interior of the structure, it starts to get dark," said Bain. In a 10,900-square-foot home he designed in Phoenix, an atrium doubled as a light source and oasis that was lushly landscaped and had a water feature. "It actually became one of my favorite spaces in the home because it was very, very secluded," Bain said.
