Daylight saving time will begin this weekend, so get ready for clocks to “spring forward” one hour to adjust daylight in Santa Barbara County.
At 2 a.m. Sunday, Santa Barbara County clocks will officially leap ahead one hour. The tradition will make the sun rise later into the morning and set later into the evening each day for the next several months.
Daylight saving time will end Sunday, Nov. 7, when clocks will "fall back.”
Residents should manually reset analog and other standalone clocks forward one hour from the displayed time before going to bed Saturday night, or Sunday morning.
The Lompoc City Fire Department encouraged people to use this biannual clock-shifting to change the batteries on smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.
A national campaign, dubbed “Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery,” urged residents to change the batteries in their smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors at least twice a year at the start and end of daylight saving time.
After putting new batteries in a smoke detector, residents should activate the safety test button to make sure the detector is working, interim Fire Chief Brian Federmann said.
Lompoc city firefighters recommended that people test smoke detectors at least once a month, Federmann said.
“If there is any doubt regarding the working condition of a smoke detector, it is best to replace it,” he said.
Although smoke detectors are in most American homes, Federmann said, many devices do not work because the battery is dead.
Dead batteries are responsible for about 25% of smoke alarm failures, according to the National Fire Protection Association.
“A working smoke detector provides an early warning of a fire and gives people the critical extra seconds needed to escape,” Federmann said. “This Sunday, when you change your clock, change your battery.”
As the clocks move forward, Santa Barbara officials reminded people to think about disaster kits, emergency preparedness and communication plans. Click here for six safety tips for getting started, including an emergency kit list and recovery planning.
