When it comes to outdoor entertaining on warm summer nights, nothing sets the mood quite like a sea of twinkling lights. Figuring out exactly how to create a professional-looking string-light setup can be tricky, though—what's the best way to hang them? How do you attach them? How can you avoid ending up tangled in a web of wires? So we asked House Beautiful contributor Eddie Ross to show us how he creates a party-ready string-light canopy in his own yard at Edgewood Hall. Read on for his expert tricks!
You'll Need:
- Outdoor string lights (Eddie used three 20-foot lengths)
- Metal fence post
- Two double wall hooks
- Hose clamp (make sure it's slightly larger in diameter than the fence post)
- Screwdriver
- Zip ties (if your lights don't have pre-installed clips)
- Outdoor extension cord
- Stepladder
How to Hang String Lights:
1. If you're using lights with large or delicate bulbs, remove them first to avoid breaking any. Connect your light strings.
2. Place the metal post about 10 feet from a tree; you'll create your light canopy in between.
3. Loop the hose clamp around the center of the two hooks at the top of the pole; use a screwdriver to tighten the clamp.
4. Hammer the pole into the ground, making sure that the hooks are facing the tree. Use a small piece of wood as a buffer so you don’t damage the edge of the pole or cause crimping.
5. Time to start hanging the lights. Start by attaching one end to the tree canopy (use the plug end to make it easier to hide the extension cord). If your lights don't have built-in clips, use zip ties to secure.
6. String the lights along the branch towards the post; when you reach the post, wrap the wire around one of the hooks.
7. Keep stringing the lights back and forth between the post and the tree canopy. Each time you reach the tree, string the lights horizontally under the canopy for a few feet to create space between each light strand.
8. Re-attach bulbs.
9. Plug the lights into an outdoor extension cord attached to a power outlet and you're ready to go!
