State House District 20 Representative Ray Sorensen (R) says it shouldn’t have come as a surprise that the Republican-led legislature passed a bill mandating a 24-hour abortion waiting period in the final hours of the legislative session.
The bill was passed by the House around 11 p.m. Saturday June 13th, and by the Senate at about 6 a.m. the following morning, hours after the bill was introduced, and after the House GOP failed to vote on an abortion-related constitutional amendment earlier this year.
Rep. Sorensen voted in favor of the waiting period, “Already in Iowa Code it exists, waiting periods, for certain things. So you know it’s 90 days you have to wait to get a divorce and you have to wait 72 hours to get a marriage certificate or to adopt a child and things like that so 24 hours didn’t seem like an undue burden or extreme for such a life changing decision.”
In 2018 the Iowa Supreme Court struck down a 72-hour waiting period as unconstitutional, which led Republican lawmakers and anti-abortion activists to accuse the court of “judicial activism.” To hear more on the end of the legislative session from Sorensen, listen to today’s Let’s Talk Guthrie County program on air and at raccoonvalleyradio.com.
