STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Scientists with the World Health Organization on Sunday cited 183,000 new cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) over a 24-hour span, while more than two-thirds of the deaths in that time-frame occurred in the Americas.
The increase in cases is the highest in a one-day span on record since the start of the pandemic, according to a Daily News report.
Brazil and the United States placed first and second with the number of new infections reported; 54,771 and 36,617, respectively.
In total, 4,743 people died.
According to experts, the spike in reported cases could be attributed to both widespread infection and more tests being administered.
Free city- and state-run testing sites now are available in each of the five boroughs, as city officials have set a goal on their end for testing capacity to reach 50,000 tests per day by July.
Last week, officials announced three additional sites on Staten Island.
