Hour 11 and there was yet more drama – first the #24 BMW had a brief fuel fire on pit lane and at the same time out came the Full Course Yellows as the #31 ground to a halt out in the darkness, Mike Conway finding no drive.
That threw the cat amongst the pigeons throughout the field and when the race went back to green the lead advantage from Scott Dixon was extended, until the penultimate pitstop and there was drama on the way in as the #25 BMW of Connor de Phillipi hit the Cadillac hard on the right front corner as he tried to get to pit lane.
That left the car with broken steering, game over as far as the win was concerned, the lead back into the hands of the #60 Meyer Shank Acura with just over an hour to go, the car pitting to allow the #5 to have a go in the lead at the top of the hour!
The #31 was a confirmed retirement
LMP2 looked very stable, the #52 a big (but not quite full lap) lead over the #18
GTLM though was up in the air again, the #3 Corvette had pitted just before the caution and was able to take just a splash when the main runner pitted under yellow to leapfrog back to the lead!
The #25, despite the dramas with the #01 was close behind in second with the #79 Porsche not too far back either!
LMP3 was another class that saw a topsy turvy 11th hour as the field bunched upon under caution and Colin Braun took full advantage as it went back to green, taking the #54 Core Autosports Ligier from seemingly nowhere to the lead ahed of Bleekemolen and Pigot.
GTD too saw dramas emerging, the #12 Lexus of Zach Veach moving to the lead as the race went green, but as it turned out, jumping the gun and getting a penalty for his trouble, but worse still tangling with Laurens Vanthoor before he took it, the Lexus suffering damage and requiring a repair too – out of contention.
That left a top five with three Porsches! Leading into the final hour was the 9 Pfaff car of Vanthoor with Pat Long close behind in the #16 Wright Motorsports car. Third was a charging Ross Gunn in the #23 Aston Martin with Katherine Legge (#88 Hardpoint EBM Porsche) and Andy Lally (#44 Magnus/ Archangel Acura completing the top 5.
