A man accused of lunging at police with a kitchen knife Monday afternoon is now facing multiple charges, North Middleton Township police said.
A nearly three-hour standoff began around 12:46 p.m. Monday when township police were called to the 1400 block of Newville Road because of a suicidal person.
Luis I. Pedroso, 25, was armed with a knife, and at the end of the standoff advanced toward officers with the knife raised, police said.
Pedroso was in the garage of a home on the 1400 block when officers arrived, according to Gary Carver, North Middleton Township’s police chief. Police evacuated the home’s other residents and called a mental health professional to the scene, according to Carver.
But Carver said Pedroso became agitated three hours into the negotiations and ran out into the road with the knife. A Carlisle police officer assisting at the scene shot Pedroso with a beanbag round so he could be detained.
Police shut down Newville Road — which doubles as State Route 641 and passes right in front of the home where Pedroso was found — to provide some peace and quiet during negotiations. The highway reopened around 4:30 p.m.
Pedroso was detained around 4 p.m., police said. They said he was treated for minor injuries at Carlisle UPMC and then taken to Cumberland County Prison.
Pedroso is charged with attempted aggravated assault, simple assault and terroristic threats. According to online records, he was unable to post $100,000 bail and remains imprisoned as of Tuesday morning.
