A 12-year-old Scandia girl reported missing Tuesday afternoon was found stuck in a marshy area near her house about three hours later.

According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the girl was reported missing about 3:45 p.m. Tuesday after she reportedly walked off into the woods in her back yard “with no suspicious circumstances and hadn’t returned within an hour.”

Crews spent almost three hours searching for the girl in the area of 190th Street North and Langley Avenue North in Scandia, said Cmdr. Tim Harris of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

“She literally couldn’t get out of the marsh area,” he said. “She was in far enough that it restricted her from moving.”

A nearby resident, who had received a CodeRed community alert about the missing girl, joined the search, spotted her near his back yard and called 911, Harris said.

“We had a ton of community members who went out and started to look for her after they got the alert,” Harris said.

The child was recovered and returned home safely after being evaluated.

In addition to community members, Scandia Fire and Rescue Team, the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter, M Health medics, and Washington County deputies, reserve deputies, the mounted patrol, the investigations unit and the water, parks and trails unit helped with the search.
