Five of NJ Transit’s nine rail lines resumed service, while the others are still being assessed for damage from the effects of Tropical storm Ida’s remnants.
The North Jersey Coast Line was the latest line to return to service on Thursday, joining the Northeast Corridor, Morris & Essex and Atlantic City lines. All will operate on a regular weekday schedule.
The Main/Bergen/Port Jervis Lines will join them Friday morning, operating on a regular weekday schedule with delays of up to 60 minutes due to running on a single track, officials said.
The Pascack Valley, Montclair/Boonton and Gladstone Branch remain suspended while damage is assessed. The Raritan Valley, where a train has stuck at flood gates near Bound Brook Thursday, remains suspended until further notice due to significant flood impacts, officials said.
Rail service was suspended late Wednesday night and crews spent Thursday assessing damage due to flooding, wash outs, downed trees and wires, caused by the storm.
Two of its three light rail systems are providing full service Thursday afternoon, as well.
Hudson Bergen Light Rail is expected to operate on a regular weekday schedule on Friday, with busing between Tonnelle Ave. and Bergenline Stations, and single tracking through Richard Street to continue. Customers may encounter delays due to residual impacts of Ida.
Flooding on the NEC was blamed for stranding 200 passengers on a train for close to 10 hours Wednesday night into Thursday morning after four to five feet of water disabled the train and thwarted several rescue attempts.
Bus service will continue to operate. A regular weekday schedule is planned for Friday and passengers should continue to expect delays and detours through the service day.
Systemwide cross honoring of tickets and commuter passes between trains, light rail and NJ Transit and private carrier buses is in effect. Passengers are urged to check alerts on NJTransit.com and Twitter for their line and to download the NJ Transit smartphone app.
