It began on a journey to the Skyspace in Lech, Austria, accessible only through daring, off-piste skiing during the winter months. After trying and failing to find it himself twice, Robert Kofler employed the help of a well-versed skiing guide who sought out the installation, tucked into a hillside and built mostly underground. “We wanted to show our gratitude to the wonderful people of this country where we decided to build our little hotel, and I thought of doing something like a sculpture park, but it was only until I was sitting in the Skyspace in the Austrian Alps that I thought, ‘This would be great’,” Kofler recalled with a beaming smile. “And between us, I really did not expect that James Turrell would say yes, because I saw all of the places his works were built. I myself knew José Ignacio was a special place, but James had never been here, so I wasn’t sure if he felt this place was worthy of his Skyspace. When he said he would do it, I was jumping up and down.”

With the possibility of in-person collaboration hampered by the pandemic, Turrell and the Kofler family set out on the year-long task of building the Ta Khut Skyspace via video conference, obsessively checking and re-checking every specification provided by Turrell’s architectural team, based in the reclusive 82-year-old artist's hometown of Flagstaff, Arizona. It was not until a week and a half before Ta Khut’s official opening that Turrell traveled to José Ignacio to install the colored lights projected within the structure and make the necessary adjustments, a process Turrell refers to as “programming”; an art in and of itself that breathes life into the piece when the lights are turned on twice per day at sunrise and sunset.
