A person was trapped for about an hour Sunday night in a vehicle that crashed into an Interstate 78 overpass concrete pillar in Weisenberg Township, the local fire department reports.
Firefighters from Weisenberg, Trexlertown and Fogelsville and an EMS crew from Cetronia Ambulance were dispatched about 6:30 p.m. to Old Route 22 and Heffner Road for a vehicle that came to a stop up an embankment under I-78, the Weisenberg Volunteer Fire Department said on Facebook.
“The patient extrication process was challenging due to how the vehicle was positioned and the terrain crews had to work off of,” the department said in the post.
It took about 50 minutes to free the person from the vehicle and the patient was initially driven to a helicopter landing site, the department and a report from the scene said. But instead of flying the patient, the ambulance then drove them to an area hospital, the report said.
New Tripoli firefighters also assisted, the Weisenberg department said.
Freelance photographer Mike Nester provided reporting from the scene.
