No. 4 UCLA's home game vs. Alabama State was called off less than an hour prior to tip on Wednesday night. The school announced the contest would "not be played as scheduled due to COVID-19 protocols."
The school's statement came a little more than three and a half hours after UCLA initially disclosed that coach Mick Cronin would not be coaching due to COVID-19 protocols.
No further details were provided. It was the second game in less than two weeks UCLA lost due to COVID. Washington had to cancel its Dec. 5 home game vs. the Bruins and take a forfeit (and league loss in the Pac-12 standings), per conference rules. UCLA is scheduled to play Saturday against North Carolina in the CBS Sports Classic, the first game of a doubleheader that is also scheduled to feature No. 15 Ohio State vs. No. 21 Kentucky.
As COVID has begun to once again disrupt the sports world, with the NFL, NBA and NHL announcing more than a hundred combined confirmed cases in recent weeks, college basketball has also started to feel the creep of the virus. Earlier on Wednesday, Cleveland State announced it was going on a COVID pause, becoming the seventh men's program this season to do so -- joining Abilene Christian, Georgia State, Nevada, Tulane, Wagner and Washington.
