One of the pieces that Voca Lyrica is singing in its holiday concert this year is a version of “This Little Light of Mine.” And something that many of us who sing in Voca Lyrica have realized is that music — indeed the singing of music — IS our light. It’s what rejuvenates us, inspires us, and brings us together.
During the past months that we have spent isolated from each other, we learned, like many others, how much the joy of human companionship means to us. And when that companionship cannot happen, it’s almost like unplugging the power cord to your spirit.
We in Voca Lyrica missed not only each other, but the whole process of making music together, which is a powerful bond that reaches across the choir. We may not personally “know” all the 40-some women who are singing this fall, but we know that making music together helps us all plug back in to the joy of living.
Yes, we Zoomed over those months, but not everyone could do that. And, yes, we held several songfests down at the band shell, socially distanced and masked, of course. Both of those events were uplifting to a degree, but they were like the diet version of the real thing.
When we met for the first time this fall, again socially distanced, masked, and following all the proper protocols for singing in the time of COVID, it was like the power coming back on after an outage. Even just warming up was thrilling! We were together again. We were making music.
Singing with a mask on is no fun. But we’re doing it because it’s the right thing to do. The same is true for the young ladies from Vocal Majority and Bel Canto who are coming from Traverse City to sing with us. Our recent rehearsal with them was nothing short of uplifting. Their youthful, resilient spirits and musical expertise gave us all a shot in the arm that was like a vaccine. Put that all together with the ebullient sound of our own Treblemakers, the youth choir Voca Lyrica sponsors, and we’ll all be glowing from within, courtesy of the joy of singing.
So if you are in need of a little extra light in your life, and who isn’t at this time of the year when the days are getting shorter, come share the light and the joy with all of us at the Big Rapids High School auditorium at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, and again at 7 p.m. The evening concert will also feature the Con Brio Voce Brass Quintet. Tickets are available at the Old Pioneer Store and Patterson’s Flowers in Big Rapids, and at the Purple Plum in Canadian Lakes, as well as at the door. Seating will be socially distanced and masks must be worn.
‘Tis the season of light, and we cherish it. Let us bring some light into your life.
