After a four-day suspension, the Regional Transportation District announced Tuesday morning it had restored bus and light rail service throughout downtown Denver on a limited basis through Thursday.
RTD had suspended all service to and from downtown Denver since Friday because of the large demonstrations seeking justice for George Floyd, the black man who died on Memorial Day after a white Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
Beginning Tuesday morning, RTD will run buses and trains in and out of downtown throughout the day, with the last ones departing by 6:30 p.m., at which time Union Station and Civic Center Station will close.
Transit officials said the schedule is designed to get RTD vehicles and riders out of downtown before Mayor Michael Hancock’s emergency curfew takes effect at 9 p.m. That curfew, which lasts until 5 a.m. the next day, is in place through Thursday night and into Friday morning
“With fewer protests downtown, RTD considers it safe to operate its trains and buses in the downtown area,” officials with the transit agency said in a news release Tuesday morning.
RTD officials are working with their own transit police and the Denver Police Department, and said they will continue to monitor the situation to determine whether any additional changes to service are warranted. The agency recommends people consult the RTD website’s Rider Alerts for up-to-date route information.
Demonstrations sparked by Floyd’s death began in Denver on Thursday night and continued through the weekend, with a fifth consecutive night of protests and marches taking place Monday night.
That latest demonstration in Denver was peaceful for hours and allowed by police to continue long after the 9 p.m. curfew, but still culminated after midnight with officers firing tear gas on protesters for the fifth straight night.
