WAUKESHA - A man, possibly armed, who allegedly beat his girlfriend and tried to strangle her with her own T-shirt surrendered to police after a three-hour standoff early Wednesday morning at her home.

His arrest shortly before 7 a.m. was the culmination of a sequence of events that began Tuesday, when the woman told police that 29-year-old suspect struck her repeatedly in the face, ripped off her shirt and wrapped it around her neck as she struggled to breathe.

The incident was heightened by reports of two previous domestic-abuse reports involving the man, who is not a Waukesha resident, and the woman, who lives in the 1000 block of East Racine Avenue where the incidents occurred.

According to Waukesha police:

The woman said that in one of those prior incidents the man pointed a gun at her 5-year-old child. She also told police that the man was armed when the man fled her residence Tuesday before police arrived.

While the woman was taken to a safe shelter for the night, police continued their search for the suspect.

At about 3:40 a.m., an officer reportedly spotted him as he ran into the woman's vacant Racine Avenue residence, where police say he barricaded himself and refused their orders to surrender.

As a result, the city dispatched its high-risk tactical unit, surrounding the residence while trying to make contact with the suspect. At about 6:53 a.m., the man "began a dialog" with police, ultimately surrendering without further incident.

A firearm was recovered at the scene, police said.

Waukesha Police Capt. Dan Baumann said the suspect could face domestic abuse and weapons charges.

Baumann added that the incident served as a reminder for women in abusive relationships of protecting themselves.

"We strongly encourage those impacted by domestic violence to reach out to advocacy groups," he said. "The Women’s Center (in Waukesha) offers confidential, no-cost services to survivors of domestic violence."
