Perseid Meteor Shower – Up to 60 Per Hour - TAPinto.net

RED BANK, NJ: The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak tonight, Tuesday, August 11 and Wednesday, August 12.

Find a dark location and you’ll see a considerate amount of shooting stars, maybe even a couple of fireballs.

The August moon will be in a waning phase so stargazers will be able to see some Perseids for 10 or more days after the peak.

The best time to see these shooting stars are after midnight until dawn.

“The Perseids have been observed for at least 2,000 years and are associated with the comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits the sun once every 133 years.  Each year in August, the Earth passes through a cloud of the comet's debris.  These bits of ice and dust -- most over 1,000 years old -- burn up in the Earth's atmosphere to create one of the best meteor showers of the year, said Bill Cooke from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in a NASA chart article.
