The Wenatchee School District decided Monday on a new bell schedule for next year that will see middle and high schools start about an hour later than elementary schools.
Superintendent Paul Gordon said he appreciates the 1,287 responses from community members, staff, and students who participated in two different surveys leading up to the decision.
Gordon said, “It was clear that the research of starting our students, especially our high school students, at a later time has a very significant impact. Especially in the two areas of math and literacy.”
Research also showed when secondary schools start as early as they have been within the district, 28% of students self-reported that they fell asleep in class at least once a week. When secondary schools start later, students average a 40% decrease in tardiness.
Elementary schools will now begin at 7:45 am, with the Early Childhood Learning Center’s schedule being 7:55 am to 10:25 am, 11:45 am to 2:15 pm.
Secondary start times are as follows:
- Middle Schools – 8:50 am
- Wenatchee High School – 8:40 am
- WestSide High School – 8:35 am
- Wenatchee Valley Technical Skills Center 8:40 am to 11:25 am, 12:35 pm to 3:05 pm
Assistant Superintendent Mark Helm said the change is also aimed at fixing several problems with their current bus route schedule. Some problems include students riding the bus for two or more hours, special needs students transferring buses, and morning routes not mirroring afternoon routes.
Helm said, “Not only do we not have enough drivers to support our routes, but it’s affecting our ability to give our kids those experiences that we all think are important like sports, field trips, clubs, and activities. We don’t have enough bus drivers to run our routes and provide those different experiences, especially in the spring.”
The district is now exploring expanding daycare options for parents. Another survey will eventually be sent out asking parents questions regarding the issue.
