CONCORD — The popular drive-thru chain Dutch Bros. Coffee plans to open a location in Concord if it gets the city Planning Commission’s approval next week.

The company wants to build an 850-square-foot restaurant with a 24-hour drive-thru, as well as an 8,000-square-foot Kiddie Academy child care center.

The drive-thru would be located on 1.1 acres at the corner of Clayton and Bailey roads, near other fast-food eateries such as Taco Bell and Subway, as well as restaurants Koon Thai Kitchen and AGA Grill Kebab House.

It would be the chain’s third Bay Area location; the other drive-thru eateries are in Brentwood and Oakley.

Dutch Bros., which was founded in Southern Oregon and now has dozens of California locations, famously does not sell regular hot or iced drip coffee. Instead, the company serves only espresso, cold brew and tea in its caffeinated offerings, as well as other beverages and sweet foods.

A representative from Dutch Bros. declined to comment on the opening of a Concord location, saying the approval process was still in its early stages.

“I know they’re anxious to move forward with the project,” city planner Ryan Lenhardt said. “They’re very motivated to move forward.”

The lack of conventional coffee on the menu was not a sticking point for residents at a city-held neighborhood meeting last year regarding the development’s planning. But some who own businesses or other properties near the potential location did express some concerns about the development, according to Lenhardt.

Specifically, they worried that the drive-thru would increase traffic on Bailey Road and lead to long queues of cars backed up on the street, Lenhardt said.

Some people also suggested that the outdoor playground at Kiddie Academy’s child care center could be too noisy for tenants of Vintage Brook Senior Apartments, which would be located directly south of the new business.

At a meeting last week, the Planning Commission postponed a hearing on the project to Sept. 1 so staff could meet with blind, disabled and elderly members of the community, as required by state law for developments with drive-thrus.

Dutch Bros. would be the latest corporate coffee chain to set up shop in Concord, which already has seven Starbucks.

The company was founded by brothers Dane and Travis Boersma in Grants Pass, Oregon, during the early 1990s. It has since opened locations across the West Coast, and last year expanded into Texas and Oklahoma.
