SAN DIEGO —
A San Diego Police department canine helped end a three-hour standoff with a suspect just after noon on Saturday near University Avenue and Chollas Parkway.
San Diego Police Officer Tony Martinez said the suspect had threatened officers with a knife and other weapons during the standoff.
A man and woman called police Saturday morning from their car in the area, saying that the suspect had thrown a hammer at the couple, breaking the windshield. They provided the police a description of the suspect and his van, Martinez said.
Police found the suspect sitting in his vehicle near where the incident had occurred at about 9:25 a.m. and Martinez said the suspect threatened officers with a knife and threw several tools at them.
The officers were unable to get the suspect to leave the van but were able to shoot a pepper ball into the van, and then sent in the K9 officer, which bit the suspect at about 12:20 p.m.
The suspect, Juan Escobar, was taken to a local hospital, then was booked into the downtown San Diego County jail, Martinez said.
