Scattered light yields full picture of tiny motions

Optical technique overcomes limitations of standard imaging methods.

Researchers have developed an optical imaging technique that can track microscopic displacements over a field of view that spans several centimetres.

In research areas from condensed-matter physics to fluid mechanics, the dynamics of physical systems are studied by following the motion of their constituent elements. However, imaging techniques typically involve a trade-off between the extent of the movement that can be tracked and the overall observation area.

Stefano Aime at the PSL University in Paris and his colleagues have developed a solution to this problem through a combination of imaging and laser-light scattering. Their approach can measure displacements as small as 10 nanometres over an area spanning a few square centimetres.

To demonstrate the technique, the team captured how a substance called a colloidal gel deformed as a crack propagated through it. The researchers found that the deformation process differed from that predicted by conventional fracture mechanics. The technique could provide insights into previously unobservable phenomena, the researchers say.
