COLUMBIANA–Homestead Kitchen and Cocktails located at 163 Town Center Avenue is hosting Yappy Hour from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
The event celebrates National Dog Day Aug. 26 founded by rescue advocate, conservationist, dog trainer and author Colleen Paige.
The funds raised will benefit the Columbiana Firestone Dog Park. Contributions to the dog park total $72,715, with a goal of $80,000.
Ann Bullen, co-owner of Homestead Kitchen & Cocktails, wants to inspire others to participate in the culture of philanthropy and cooperation among business owners in Columbiana.
“Century 21 has given $300; Orange Leaf is doing a doggy sundae with dog bones on top. They have been very helpful contributing to the dog park,” Bullen said.
The Restoration and Beautification Committee of Columbiana believes a dog park located in Firestone Recreational Park will allow dogs and humans to enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercising and form a common thread to bring people together. Bullen considers the dog park an amenity to the city allowing people with limited space a place their dogs can get exercise.
“If you’re older and you want to walk your dog, you might not be able to walk your dog but you can walk to the dog park, sit down on one of the benches and play with your dog,” Public Relations Specialist Mary Ann Green added.
Both Green and Bullen anticipate having another location allowing area residents to interact and socialize easily.
“This is a cultural expression here in Columbiana,” Green said.
Yappy Hour will include several dog themed events such as a dog hat wearing contest, a Chinese auction, tipsy dog art, dog themed cocktails, local vendors, Animal Charity of Ohio rescue, a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction, Hot Diggity dogs & chips along with puppy themed sugar cookies for children.
“There’s some research that shows that people move to communities where there are dog parks,” Green said. “The social benefits for humans can’t be ignored.”
Yappy Hour will be a free event where all residents with or without dogs are encouraged to have a fun time.
