Lights Unsynced - The SandPaper

To the Editor:

Recently I’ve had the occasion to leave the Island in the very early hours of the morning, usually between 4 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. What I have noticed immediately is that the traffic lights are no longer synchronized to all change from green to red at the same time, as they have been in the past.

In Beach Haven and some blocks in Ship Bottom, the lights are out of sync completely, resulting in only allowing you to proceed a hundred feet to the next red light. So on and so forth it goes several times until you realize that at 30 to 35 mph it’s now taking you 45 minutes to get off the Island for a 7-mile drive from Beach Haven.

The more ominous effect this is having on moving traffic on the Island that I’ve noticed is the race to make it through the next traffic light before it turns red. The counters on the side of the road display the brightly colored monitors in seconds before the yellow light comes on and red appears. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve witnessed cars and trucks speeding through red lights just so they can advance their exit off the Island a little bit faster. It’s not because these individuals are ardent law breakers. No, I believe it’s done out of the frustration of proceeding for only 30 seconds before they need to stop again, and again.

More consideration and study should be given to first fixing the lights that are broken and maybe extending the interval between red and green lights. Or, as in many municipalities throughout America, set the lights in a progressive program where they turn green as you approach them while they are in synchronization with the local speed limits. These are just my thoughts before someone gets hurt.
