Two drivers face citations in connection with Thursday afternoon’s five-vehicle crash that closed Route 22 East for about an hour, causing significant backups through the Lehigh Valley, Pennsylvania State Police say.
The driver of a 2018 Nissan Frontier, which police say was the first vehicle involved in the crash, was cited for a safe-speed violation.
The other driver, whose 2017 Hyundai Elentra was involved in the wreck, was cited for driving under suspension.
Both of these drivers, and a passenger in the Elantra, were taken by ambulance to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg in Bethlehem for treatment. The driver of a 2010 Acura TSX also was taken to the hospital.
The drivers of a 2020 Honda Pilot and 2016 GMC Acadia that were involved were uninjured, police said.
The crash occurred about 4:10 p.m. on eastbound Route 22 just west of Route 378 near the border between Bethlehem and Hanover Township, Lehigh County, state police said in a news release Friday night.
Both eastbound lanes were closed for about an hour. Four of the vehicles were towed from the scene. Police were continuing to investigate the crash.
The Bethlehem Township Volunteer Fire Co. assisted at the scene, as did one of its ambulances and ambulances from Bethlehem EMS, the Hanover Township Volunteer Fire Co. No. 1 and Dewey Fire Co. No. 1, according to the release.
All of the motorists are listed as having worn seat belts, with the exception of the driver of the Nissan Frontier. Police were unsure if he wore a seat belt.
