LAKE COUNTY, Ohio – Officers shot and killed an armed man Tuesday morning following a five-hour SWAT standoff in Leroy Township, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
Officers shot the 57-year-old man after he exited the home with a long gun and pointed it at officers, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. He died after being taken to University Hospitals TriPoint Medical Center.
The sheriff’s office has not released the man’s name or identified the officers involved in the fatal shooting.
Sheriff’s deputies went to the home on Leroy Center-Road early Tuesday after the man called the dispatch center and said he was going to kill someone, the news release says.
Deputies arrived and found the man holding a 60-year-old woman at gunpoint outside of the home, the news release says. Deputies managed to get him to release the woman, and he went back inside the home.
The woman said the man came to her home about 3 a.m. to discuss their relationship. She said he assaulted her and stabbed her several times, the news release says.
The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. Her condition was not released.
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office SWAT team was called in to try to talk the man into surrendering. Deputies could see the man through the windows, walking through the house and into the garage and occasionally pointing a rifle and a handgun at them, the news release says.
The man then started to break windows around the home, and poured what appeared to be gasoline inside the residence, the news release says. He set fire to the home about 9 a.m. before he walked outside the to backyard with a long gun in his hand, the news release says.
Officers fired less-lethal rounds at the man when he did not comply with an order to put down his weapon. The man then raised his gun and pointed it officers, who shot him, the news release says.
The man was treated at the scene before he was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 10 a.m.
The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is handling the investigation into the shooting. The Lake County Arson Investigative Unit will be the investigating the cause of the fire in the home. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will investigate the attack on the woman.
