LIMA — A Lima man has turned a front yard light display into a chance to raise money for sick children.

Jeffrey Clary has decorated his property at 760 W. O’Connor Ave. with seasonal lights both for Halloween and for Christmas.

“We started it last year, that was the first year. I did a Halloween show last year also, but I didn’t really advertise it or push it too much. This year I made it a little bigger and better and added to it,” Clary said.

He’s hoping the Halloween light display, and one he’ll put up just after Thanksgiving, will help raise money for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. His goal is $10,000.

“I was given about eight months to live with my cancer. I had stage four, non-small cell lung cancer and Dr. (David) Powell here in Lima gave me eight months and a 4% chance of making it past eight months,” Clary said. “Well, I’m going on three years, so I want to give back. I decided to start the shows to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital to help kids.”

Clary is happy with the support he’s gotten.

“We’ve had a lot of people pull up and during Trick or Treat night. All the kids love it, and so do their families,” Clary said.

If you see a few Christmas trees decorated for Halloween, it’s something he meant to do.

“I decided to do Christmas shows, but you can use the same props for Halloween. Basically, it’s the colors and the themes and the songs that blend together to make it, and you can take a tree and make it look like something else in the dark. Bushes, I can make them look like pumpkins, so the props work for both,” Clary said.

Clary’s light show is set to music that people can tune into on their car radio by going to 96.3 FM.

“It makes me feel great. It helps me get through my cancer because I’m doing something for children who are innocent and don’t deserve that (cancer),” Clary said.

Clary didn’t say if he plans to dress his werewolf up as Santa or not, but during the Halloween season the werewolf was pretty popular.

“The kids liked it. We had a family come back after we were closed and the lights were off,” Clary said. “They knocked on the door and asked if they could get a picture with the werewolf, so I turned it back on, took some pictures and posted on my Facebook site along with other pictures like it.”

Sunday was the last night for the Halloween light display, but the Christmas lights will be fired up Black Friday and run through the holidays.

If you would like to donate to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, you can through his Facebook page, Clary Christmas Lights, at facebook.com/ClaryChristmasLights. There’s a secure donation that you can click on, and the donation goes directly to St. Jude’s.
