Wind gusts upward of 90 miles per hour slammed against the Massachusetts coastline Wednesday morning, a hurricane-strength feat that left more than 450,000 customers without power across the state.
Data released by the National Weather Service showed that the highest winds hit Southeastern Massachusetts with many towns on Cape Cod and the Islands registering wind speeds above 80 miles-per-hour.
In Edgartown, on Martha’s Vineyard, winds gusts reached 94 miles per hour the highest in the state. In nearby Vineyard Haven, wind gusts topped out at 88 miles per hour.

On the South Shore towns of Scituate and Duxbury, where nearly all customers lost power, wind gusts topped 87 and 84 miles per hour, respectively.
Cape Cod saw similar measurements. On the Outer Cape, Wellfleet, Eastham and Truro all registered winds between 80 and 83 miles per hour. On Dennis, further south, winds were as high as 84 miles per hour.
The wind caused significant tree damage to many of these areas. On the South Shore, a video shared by WBZ showed a large tree falling across the roof of a house, and ripping up concrete with it.
Images shared by the Duxbury Fire Department showed a large pine tree falling directly over the hood of a truck.
The winds will continue into Wednesday afternoon as they taper off, the National Weather Service said. A high wind warning is in effect until 2 p.m. That will mean winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour, with gusts up to 65 miles per hour, with damage to trees and power lines expected.
